“Anna Sokolova developed the expansive installation NETZ (NET) especially for Sankt Peter, an installation that spans diagonally across the chancel and consistently continues her LINEMENT series of works.
The light sculpture, which extends from floor to ceiling, constantly changes its appearance: when fully illuminated, it appears as an unnaturally bright beam of light falling from the upper windows onto the concrete floor, unusual for this dark time of the year. In the next moment, a white stripe of light moves across the dark background of the mesh fabric, slowly changing its angle and creating shifting geometric constellations and light conditions in dialogue with the church interior.
Upon closer inspection it becomes apparent that the approximately 20-metre-long installation consists of a semi-transparent net of LED lights. Using this special fabric for oversized image and video presentations, Anna Sokolova has created a minimalist, precisely placed sculpture with a brightness and technical contours that stand in stark contrast to the church architecture.
At the same time, NETZ can be perceived as a connecting element between exterior and interior, brightness and darkness, ornament and abstraction, timelessness and permanence, faith and immanence. In addition, and despite its state-of-the-art technical apparatus, the net-like, slightly sagging structure evokes associations with fishing nets and, here in St. Peter, biblical references.
With fascinating precision and a consistent visual reduction, Anna Sokolova dispenses with narrative elements in her artistic work and incorporates the exhibition space as an integral part. For over two decades, the Belarusian artist has been exploring the interaction between the motif of the white line and its immediate architectural surroundings. In her multimedia installations, the rhythm and proportions of the LINEMENTs are adjusted anew. The works are further developed for the respective exhibition context, reimagined and installed site-specifically with mirrors, projections, monitors or even flags.
The minimalist, yet technically highly complex intervention NETZ continues the basic concept of Kunst-Station Sankt Peter and enters into a direct dialogue with the architectural and sacred space and the people in it: a time-based work of art that does not adorn its architectural surroundings, but acts as a connecting element between space, time and perception.”
